Songbirds

Seduction in a song is twice as sweet…

.

Cross Strickland is the king of his empire. As the CEO of a major record label, his life is work and he leaves room for little else. Women are for stress relief and plus ones at events. Emotional attachments are for the weak.

.

Ava Monroe and Knight McKay are former lovers who remained best friends because they both realized the truth about their relationship: it was missing an extra spark. They turned their passions to music, and the duo is being granted the break of a lifetime when Imperial Records offers them a chance to land a contract.

.

The sexual tension climbs and Cross finds himself drawn into a threesome he didn’t see coming. It’s one thing to share a woman, but his attraction to Knight is over the line…isn’t it? The depth of feeling for these two scares him in more ways than one, and he makes a break for it.

.

But when tragedy strikes, these two songbirds have to make the choice. Move on, or fight for their man.

Behind The Scenes of Songbirds

.

Songbirds was originally inspired by the fairy tale The Emperor And The Nightingale. One of my favorite fairy tales, but not one of the most common, as I learned. Cross Strickland, CEO of Imperial Records, is the Emperor, and Knight (Night) and Ava (bird) combined equal the nightingale for the story.

.

Knight and Ava actually used to be just Knight. This was originally just a m/m love story, but Ava crept in there out of the blue. She didn’t show herself until about halfway through the first draft, which is ironic since out of the two, Knight is usually the more subdued. So I had to rework the whole opening to add Ava in there.

.

In the original fairy tale, the Emperor becomes very ill. In Songbirds, Cross ends up being ‘taken down’ another way. But I had quite a bit of fun coming up with ways to bring some serious pain to Cross. “Should he be hit by a car? Victim of a violent mugging? Contract rabies from a squirrel bite?” Which one did I choose? You’ll just have to read and find out. :)

.

This story was my Nano project for November, 2009 and was released in November, 2010. So it is coming out on the one year “anniversary” if you will of when I wrote it. Which is kind of fun to me.
